Anchor House Week 4: Strawberries

This week I had the chance to come through on a promise I made to one of our regular ships. When they were in port last we were hanging out in the break room with the crew. Somehow we got on the subject of strawberries, Florida strawberries of course. I made the bold statement that Florida strawberries were the best. Trish followed up by clarifying that Plant City’s are the best. She had a point that is hard to argue with.

In the discussion, I told the seafarer that I would bring them some strawberries next time they were at Port Manatee. Sure enough the next time they were in port I ran to Detweillers, first thing in the morning, and picked up a half of a flat of some of the most beautiful strawberries you've ever seen. They were big, red, perfectly placed in the container in a neat and orderly fashion. They looked magnificent.

As we approached the ship, the seafarer whom I had made the promise to waved and said, “You remembered!” After we boarded the ship, we took the strawberries to the mess hall. At this point the magic began to happen. The individual I had brought the strawberries to paid the generosity forward. He shared them with the rest of the crew. I think for most it was their first Florida strawberry. For one member of the crew, it was not only his first Florida strawberry, it was his first fresh strawberry he’d ever eaten.

Watching these men experience and enjoy something new was gratifying. We may take these strawberries for granted. But for them it was a joy filled experience. I loved the expressions on their faces. As they took their first bite in the juicy, sweet berries and took out their phones to take pictures of massive berries, my heart was filled with joy, as well.

Reflecting on this experience, I wondered if what I was given was a small glimpse into what God experienced after creation. After creating Adam and Eve in the garden, he gives them every plant and animal, but one of course. Maybe God sat back and enjoyed the joy and wonder of Adam and Eve as they experienced all of these new foods.

When God finishes man Genesis 1:31 says , “...It was very good.” Completion of all other aspects of creation were simply followed by “it was good”. I envision God sitting back in his rocking chair looking over everything. He looks at the ocean and says ”that’s cool.” He looks at the flowers and says “that’s cool.” He looks at the hippopotamus and says, “that’s cool.” Then he looks at Adam and Eve enjoying a strawberry and says, “Now that is more than just cool. That is VERY cool.”

God thank you for a glimpse of the world through your eyes. It is my prayer that the seafarers who have the privilege to serve will be kept safe. I pray that you will hold them in the palm of your hand. I pray that their experience will be filled with wonderment and extraordinary experiences. I pray that your light shines on them.

Be blessed and be a blessing,
Matt

Anchor House: Week 6 Buried Treasure

When I started at Anchor House I committed to write at least one blog per week. Writing is something I enjoy and a way I get to interact with God. I can recall wanting to write about Anchor House in the days before I started, but my knowledge was limited..  To be honest I felt like I knew three things before I joined Anchor House. First,  Anchor House was a mission at Port Manatee (the Seaport, not the jail) Second, I knew it was a mission that my church, Westside Christian Church, supported with our Show Love funds.  Third, I knew God was calling me to serve Him there. However, what happened at Anchor House day to day was something of a mystery to me.   After being here for a few weeks I have learned quite a bit. I know where to look to find out when ships are coming in or departing.  I have learned that I am just tall enough to hit my head where most seafarers don’t. I have learned that flexibility is the key to serving at a seaport. One of th...

Grits

This past Saturday I got the chance to catch up with my friend at breakfast. We connected months ago over grits, of all things. I learned he really didn't care for grits. Turns out his parents used to make him eat them quite often and in many forms. As he has grown older he's made the conscious decision, he's had enough grits for a lifetime. On the other hand, I really enjoy grits. They are a wonderful breakfast food with butter, salt, and pepper. For dinner, you can't beat some good shrimp and grits. I have a recipe for jambalaya grits that will put a smile on anyone's face. It is like jambalaya meets cheese grits. Yum! My friend and I joke about grits everytime we see each other. I offer him some and he politely refuses. Of course, I respect his wishes and don't give him any grits. How do you offer someone grits? Do you insist they eat and like them because you eat them? Do you put them on their plate anyway? Do you treat them differently bec...

My Teacher

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." Psalms 32:8 NIV God's promises are grand.  He assured us that no matter what we face on this earth he is always by our side.  What's more than that He promises to teach and instruct us.  I guess God follows the "give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime" philosophy.   God provided us not only a savior but an example of how we are to exist on this planet. By his example we should be kind, tender-hearted, and quick to forgive (Ephesians 4:32).  We should be joyful (John 15:11) By his example we are to seek solitude and to be in conversation with God (Luke 5:16).  We should love all of God's people, yes even the ones we find it hard to love (John 13:34).  We are never in this alone to figure it out ourselves.  God is with us, always.  His "loving eye is on us." His Son our Savior and our tea...
