Believe to Receive

Santa Claus traverses the globe to give good children everywhere toys and gifts on Christmas Eve.  The rest of the year he and his merry elves plan and prepare. They have much to do to spread so much joy in one evening.

Santa and his elves' sole focus is giving. They are driven by generosity. In exchange, they expect nothing but maybe get some cookies, a glass of milk, and a carrot for the reindeer at the homes they stop.  It's simple- be a good kid and get the present.

It seems simple. Do something and get something. It's a classic reward cycle.

But wait there's a catch. As the saying goes, *You must believe to receive." Only those who believe in Santa will get the gifts the elves worked so hard to build.  It seems simply being a good kid isn't enough.

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”- Acts 16:31 NIV

Belief is the starting point for both Santa and Jesus.  However, with Jesus that's it.  You don't have to be a good boy or girl to get His gift, like you do to get a gift from Santa. The only way to receive the gift of salvation is by believing in Jesus. That's it.  That's all that is required.

We confess our faith in Jesus and receive the gift of salvation He provides to us.  He's already paid the price.  As disciples we then try to live in a way that honors Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. We don't do it because we need to to earn a gift like the children trying to avoid Santa's naughty list. Our gift was given before we ever breathed the air of this world. Our gift is received by faith. Our works bring glory to the giver of this incredible gift.

In just a few days we will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the gift our God gave to us. It is one that many of us may feel we don't deserve.  It's a gift that some of us may think requires us to improve ourselves before we accept it. We think we need to clean up our act before we are worthy.

STOP IT!

As we celebrate the helpless savior infant entering this world, understand you are just as powerless as a newborn baby.  Just as that baby needed Mary and Joseph to take care of Him so He could survive and grow, we need our Heavenly Father.  On our own we can't get better.  We are unable to wash ourselves clean of the effects of our sin.  Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse us and restore us as children of God. He deems us worthy and all He asks for is us to believe to receive.

One silent night, hope and joy were born in a place fit for beasts. Believe as the shepherds and wise men believed.  The gift of salvation and restoration await. Only through Jesus can we be transformed from sin-filled beasts to fully forgiven Children of God.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.- Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Be blessed and be a blessing,

Matt

Anchor House Week 31 - NAMMA

The first week of August, I had the chance to attend the North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA) Conference. NAMMA is an ecumenical, Christian association of individuals and affiliated organizations involved in maritime ministry throughout North America, including the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. I had the privilege of attending the conference with our summer intern, Gabe. For both of us it was the first time we had the chance to be a part of the conference. I enjoyed getting to meet so many individuals who serve the Lord across the globe. Each of us serves at different ports and in unique ways. The exchange of ideas was both enjoyable and informative, especially for me as the new guy. Each of the people I met had a heart for the seafarer and the challenges they face. Their hearts poured out to show the love of Jesus to the men and women aboard the vessels that visit their respective ports.   One of the highlights of the trip was meeting one

Anchor House Week12: Constant

I've gotten almost a week behind on my reflections from Anchor House. It seems there just isn't enough time in the day.  The way these blogs come together is different from week to week.  Some weeks God puts a message clearly on my heart. Others it feels like a struggle to put "pen to paper".   This week was one of those that I knew exactly what I'd write about. However, each day passed and I missed the opportunity. You see, I write best in the mornings. Not sure if it's the limited distractions, a product of my habit of practicing my spiritual disciplines in the morning, or something else entirely. Most of my afternoon writing is intelligible and requires numerous edits.  In the AM, however, they seem to make more sense.   What's funny is that as I am writing, I am feeling God moving.  He's moving from what I thought I was to write about to what He wants me to share. These shifts and changes are a part of the shipping industry.  Things hap

King of the Jews

Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They clothed Him in a purple robe and went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped Him in the face. Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.” When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take Him and crucify Him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against Him.” The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law He must die, because He claimed to be the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus g
